The time it was bookish mail -- 8

Welcome to another episode of Look What I Got in the Mail!  Let's proceed, shall we?

When I contacted Tellulah Darling about getting some signed copies of My Ex from Hell and My Date from Hell to giveaway during her interview post, I had also wanted to get a set for myself.  Not only did she donate the set for me to giveaway, Tellulah is just so awesome that she donated my set as well.  If you haven't read these books yet, you really need to.

When The Dream Thieves was about to be released, Fountain Bookstore, had an awesome pre-order thing set up with Maggie.  If you pre-ordered before a certain date, a pretty doodle of a raven would be added to Maggie's signature. So, of course I ordered a copy.  When I realized I didn't have a finished copy of The Raven Boys, I ordered one of those too. And when the copy came, I was blown away...it was more than I was expecting.

When I read The Infinite Moment of Us, I instantly fell in love with it.  I started stalking Lauren's website, hoping for a chance for her to tour near me at some point.  Alas, she was not.  When I saw that Kristen was going to Austen Teen Book Fest, I begged asked her to take my arc to get signed.  And since Kristen is so amazing, she agreed!

I got The Rule of Thirds from NetGalley and completely devoured it.  Seeing that Chantel was in Canada, I DM'd her on Twitter asking if there was a way to get signed copies.  She gave me the options to either send her a copy that she would sign and send back or to buy one through PayPal.  There was a bit of a shipping snafu, but eventually that pretty pretty book got into my hands!

If you follow me on Twitter, I'm sure you have seen my fangirling over A.G. Howard. Kristin from Beneath Shining Stars gave me an arc of Splintered and even though it took me some time to get to it [because it was swallowed by my TBR stacks], when I did, I was dying for more.  I may or may not have taken to Twitter and started harassing talking to Anita about Unhinged.

There is a long, detailed love story between us and I am far too lazy to chronicle it here.  I will tell you that it involves an Eggman, wine, Godiva and a not-so-secret rendezvous in Vegas. Needless to say, one day, this gorgeous thing showed up in my mailbox. Oh, and Anita gave me Jeb, I have proof.

We've established that I'm a spoiled brat and I love it. What pretties have you gotten recently?

The time it was about a goddess

I'm not sure how I found Tellulah Darling and her books.  I do know that I've loved every word of them and I definitely need to spread the word of her awesomeness.

And, we've all seen my recent posts about the Sassy Girl Swoony God Tourney, yes? Well, that fun adventure is almost over and I just wasn't ready to stop fangirling all over Tellulah, so I begged asked her for an interview and she agreed!

But before we get to her awesome answers, check out two of the books in the Blooming Goddess trilogy!
Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.
Annnnnnnnd:
Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in
My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.
Sounds good, right? [Trust me, they totally are.]

 1. Where did the idea for the Blooming Goddess series come from?

I was a huge myth and fairy tale lover growing up. And I've always loved the idea of playing around and retelling them. When I got serious about doing that myself, it was Persephone who spoke to me. This was back in my days as a screenwriter and so I was thinking of the idea as a possible series. But in the end, I realized I wanted to tell it in novel form. I didn't want to retell the original or just move the same story to modern day. I wanted her past mostly as is (with some liberties like Kai) and then make it firmly about a human struggling to be a goddess. To be divine. What does that mean for her? Sophie suddenly has to deal with all these expectations of herself on a global scale. It's hard enough figuring out who we are as teens, so adding the goddess layer just made it that much more of a pressure cooker.

2. What do you love most about Sophie and Kai and why should we root for them?

If I've done my job right, then Sophie and Kai will have earned their happy ending. I love romantic comedies. Between books and movies, I've consumed thousands of them. And the thing that drives me nuts is when the leads end up together without working for it. Without overcoming those flaws that make their love seem to insurmountable at the start. Sophie and Kai are highly flawed. Their respective families have done a number on them. Not to mention, the spectre of Persephone complicates everything. Teen or god - self-awareness is not big on either's agenda. But if they can acknowledge some hard truths about themselves, let themselves be vulnerable to the other, their love will be magic.

3. Did having these books rooted in mythology help or hinder the research process? Do you think there were any limitations on your characters because of it?

Even though I took some fairly big liberties with the story -- i.e. the invention of Kai -- I still wanted many of the details to be rooted in the canonical understanding of the story. For that reason, it was great to have an established pantheon to be able to explore. And while I don't think it necessarily limited how I portrayed my characters, what did perhaps pose a challenge was the fact that Greek mythology is such a richly mined territory. I didn't want my stories to come across as a pale imitation of anyone else's. So I was really conscious of "how do I make my story balance being true to the original while feeling fresh and unique?"

4. What has been your favorite part about writing the series?

Back in my screenwriting days, I always enjoyed flipping between writing features and series. Features allowed me to tell a self-contained story in a two hour period while series allowed for a deeper exploration of character and theme. I find it's the same with my novel writing. When I wrote by stand alone romcom Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls, all I wanted was to tell this funny, contained story. It wouldn't have worked as a series. But Sophie's story always demanded a trilogy. And in fact, each book had a specific thematic journey. It's been wonderful having the freedom to play with those concepts on a book-by-book basis.

5. Describe the series in five words.

Sassy goddess saves world romcom

Speed [ish] round:

1. What three things would you take to a desert island?

1) Sharp Hatchet

A very  handy tool for both chopping of kindling and decapitation purposes when the zombie apocalypse happens.  Sure, you say, what are the chances the virus will spread to my particular deserted island and infect the local animals> But do I really want to take that chance? I think not.

2) Vat of Ground Espresso -- preferably Lavazza Rossa.

This desert island stay can go one of two ways. I can be happy (with espresso) or very very cranky. Believe me, no one wants the latter. Since I'll have my hatchet to both chop wood for the fire and cut open a coconut which I'll turn into a stovetop (firetop?) expresso maker, it's just common sense.

3) MAC paramount lipstick

I don't leave home without it because I was not raised by wolves. And even if I'm only facing angry hyenas or zombies, there is no need for me to look as scary as they do. Plus at least my epitaph can say "She was stupid enough to get herself stranded on a deserted island, but boy, did she look good!"

2. What are you reading right now?

I just finished tearing through the Shifters series by Rachel Vincent which was a blast! I would love to read The Dream Thieves next, but I think I'm number 2 billion on hold at the library.

3. Who are your favorite swoony boys?

I've been thinking a lot about that because: a) why not and b) I'm planning on writing a post soon about my favourite book boyfriends. So I don't want to give too much away right now, but I will say my absolute swooniest is Jericho Barrons from the Fever series. *fans self*

4. Are there any authors that you fangirl over?

So many! Neil Gaiman, Karen Marie Moning, David Levithan, Haruki Murakami, Oscar Wilde to name a few.

The time I reviewed a book -- 4

Here we are for week 5 of the Sassy Girl Swoony God Tourney.  The challenge this week was to read and review My Date from Hell, which is book 2 in the Blooming Goddess series.

Now, this challenge is sort of bittersweet for me.  Yes, I adore reading and reviewing, but if any of you are friends with me on GoodReads, I'm sure you've noticed that the more I like a book, the less I have to say about it.

Before we see what sort of incessant rambling I'm going to try and pass off as a review, let's look at the book, shall we?
Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). **Thanks to my prancy PA, Christina, from The Book Hookup, for letting me steal borrow her review format!**

Rating & First Reaction:

5 stars. I also added it to my "I want to hang out with these characters" and "snark fest" shelves.  I reread My Ex From Hell before reading Date and absolutely loved being back in this world with these characters.  Sophie's inner monologue is one of the best out there and coupled with her awesome friends, Date was a lot of fun.

MCs:

Sophie: The snark is strong with this one and it's one of my favorite attributes of Sophie's. She does struggle with the memory of Persephone, or more that she struggles with everyone else remembering someone that she doesn't know.  To me, that just made her more relatable. What girl doesn't struggle with self-confidence at some point in their life? However, Sophie doesn't let it get her down.  She uses the skills she has to get through the challenges of the book [I'm being intentionally vague] while maintaining her epic awesomeness.  Did I mention that she's awesome?

Kai: There was a lot more of Kai in this book and the chemistry between him and Sophie was pretty much off the charts. There's a lot going on with Kai this time around and it's humorous to see the situations that he's put in. However, he's the same delightfully cocky Kai that he was in Ex. Well, maybe not exactly the same, but...spoilers.

And the swoons? They're plentiful, but I'll let you find those on your own.

Secondary Characters:

Hannah and Theo: Yep, they're still awesome. Did you like them in Ex? Then you'll love them in Date.

Festos: OMG, I want one.  Festos was my favorite character of this book and I wanted him in every single scene.  He's feisty and fierce and loyal to a fault and a perfect addition to the cast of characters. Festos breaks up a lot of the tension by injecting comments here and there. His dialogue was the main reason for all of my cackles and I found myself rereading a lot of his scenes. FYI: if you don't like him, I'm pretty sure we're not friends.

Persephone: For a character who isn't really on the page, Persephone certainly does have a presence in the book.  Tellulah does an excellent job of inserting her in the most interesting scenes and sitting back to watch the sparks fly.

Plot & Pacing:

Date picks up pretty much right after the end of Ex [which I loved] and the fun starts right away. We also don't have to wait forever for Kai and Sophie to interact, it's within the first couple of chapters.  As soon as the gang is all together, it's non-stop action and adventure.  The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger.  There's two huge reveals and then a WTF moment all in the last 10 or so pages.  I need book 3 like yesterday.

Rec It?

A million times yes. My Date From Hell continues the awesome journey that Sophie is on.  If you love snarky girls, swoony gods and delicious banter on almost every page, this is for you.

Huge thanks to Tellulah, not only for inviting me to be part of the challenge, but for the e-arc.  You guys really should check out her blog and be following her on Twitter and Facebook.  And don't forget to add all of her books to your GoodReads TBR shelf.

The time it was week 4 in the tourney

Here it is, week four in the Sassy Girl Swoony God Tourney. I have been total fail on these challenges.  Week two was a playlist challenge and I just plain forgot about it.  Week three was a tattoo challenge and I have absolutely no artistic ability whatsoever, so I skipped it...

For this week, we were tasked with the challenge of casting our choices for Sophie and Kai.  And for some reason, they both came to me right away.

My Sophie is Hailee Steinfeld.  That glint in her eye and the slight smirk just screams Sophie to me.

And my Kai is Taylor Kitsch. I just don't really have words for this picture... I mean....

Damn.

Who would you cast for Sophie & Kai?

The time it was week 1 in the tourney

Sooooo.  Here we are for week one of the Sassy Girl Swoony God Tourney.

Our first challenge was to decide what tropical location on Earth Kai kidnapped Persephone from.  I chose this:

Isn't it amazing? Those are luxury huts in Bora Bora and I'm pretty sure once I grow up and become a lottery winner, it'll be a place I visit quite frequently.

What tropical place do you want to go to?

The time I was in a tourney

A couple of weeks ago, Tellulah Darling emailed me and asked if I wanted to take part in a fun challenge type thing that would lead up to the launch of My Date from Hell. Of course, I said yes [because have you read her books?] and today the official info was posted on Tellulah's website.

I bring to you the Sassy Girl Swoony God Tourney for My Date from Hell.

Over the next six weeks, there will be new challenges that Tellulah gives us and with each challenge that complete, we receive another entry for the grand prize!  Not only does the winner get a signed copy of Date and an awesome shirt with designs from the book, but the winner gets to have a character named after them for book 3. And you guys, I really want that grand prize.

Next week is the first official challenge.  My team name is The Book Pusher. I thought it was fitting because that is what everyone seems to call me these days.

Anyhoo.  I hope you'll stick around and root for me.  There are some pretty formidable opponents!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huge thanks to Tellulah for the invite.  Go check out her website, blog, Twitter and Facebook pages.  And don't forget to add her books to your TBR shelf on GoodReads.
