The time it was five gold rings

Finally.  A gift that I can get behind! Here we are for day five of the 12 Days of Christmas giveaway!

Today we have the lovely Tamara Ireland Stone joining us.  Let's welcome her, yes?

When I was 9 years old I decided it would be fun to try to find my Christmas presents. I spent the whole month sneaking around, peeking under beds and checking the dark corners of my mom's closet. Finally, about a week before Christmas, I found the loot. It was all tucked into place on a high shelf in the hall closet, carefully hidden behind folded towels and blankets. I had to use a ladder to see everything. Bonanza. It was all there. I was elated.

Then came Christmas morning. To quote one of my favorite movies, I had an overwhelming sense of ickiness. As I opened each gift, I couldn't help but notice the looks on my parents' faces. They were waiting for me to light up with surprise and delight, and as hard as I tried I couldn't fake it. I got about three presents in before I broke down into tears. I told them everything. Of course, my mom gave me a big hug and hold me not work worry about it, but it didn't help. I'd ruined their Christmas and mine.

Since then, I've never wanted to know anything about my gifts. What can I say? I like surprises.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huge thanks to Tamara for taking the time to do this!! Make sure you're following her on Twitter, liking her Facebook page, subscribing to her blog and adding all of her books on your GoodReads shelves.
And now the giveaway!
Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet: she lives in 1995 Chicago and he lives in 2012 San Francisco. But Bennett has the unique ability to travel through time and space, which brings him into Anna’s life, and with him a new world of adventure and possibility.
As their relationship deepens, the two face the reality that time may knock Bennett back to where he belongs, even as a devastating crisis throws everything they believe into question. Against a ticking clock, Anna and Bennett are forced to ask themselves how far they can push the bounds of fate, what consequences they can bear in order to stay together, and whether their love can stand the test of time.
Fresh, exciting, and deeply romantic, Time Between Us is a stunning, spellbinding debut from an extraordinary new voice in YA fiction.
and
Calling Anna and Bennett’s romance long distance is an understatement: she’s from 1995 Chicago and he’s a time traveler from 2012 San Francisco. The two of them never should have met, but they did. They fell in love, even though they knew they shouldn't. And they found a way to stay together, against all odds.
It’s not a perfect arrangement, though, with Bennett unable to stay in the past for more than brief visits, skipping out on big chunks of his present in order to be with Anna in hers. They each are confident that they’ll find a way to make things work...until Bennett witnesses a single event he never should have seen (and certainly never expected to). Will the decisions he makes from that point on cement a future he doesn't want?
Told from Bennett’s point of view, Time After Time will satisfy readers looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story, both those who are eager to find out what’s next for Time Between Us's Anna and Bennett and those discovering their story for the first time.
That's right, I have signed paperback copies of Time Between Us and Time After Time up for grabs. And they're the extra pretty UK copies. A second winner will receive a signed paperback of Time Between Us. Rules for the giveaway are under "terms and conditions" on the Rafflecopter widget, this contest is international! Oh, and don't forget that Bennett is mine, I have proof.
The time I went to Berkeley
I convinced Hubs to take me to San Francisco for Tamara Ireland Stone's launch party for Time Between Us, so it only made sense [to me] that I would head back up there when Time After Time launched. He was unable to take the time off work, so I headed up alone.
You think the drive to Vegas is boring? This is worse. The only good thing about it is that drivers on the 5 like to drive fast, so even though it was 2 lanes the majority of the way, I maintained a good speed.
I got up to the bookstore just before 5pm and was lucky enough to find parking right next to the door. I am horrible at parallel parking, so I was a little anxious at the idea of there only being street parking available.
I went into the store and found this delightful display for the event. Of course, after I walked right passed it and had to ask where the display was....
I completely ruined it by buying all of the books. I may or may not have knocked a few things over. As soon as I told the girls behind the counter that I drove up from San Diego, I got the blank stare. [When am I going to learn that people just don't do things like this normally?]
They set the event area up early so I would have somewhere to camp out. I [like always] had eleventy billion books to flap, so I settled into the front row, got organized and started to wait.
Tamara got to the bookstore around 6:45. She saw me, hugged me, asked about my drive and introduced me again to her husband. I gave her the gift I had for her [Bri, she LOVED them!!] and we chatted for a minute or so before she started making the rounds.
And there were cupcakes with the book titles on them!
I met Anna and Keiko [who also came up from San Diego] before the signing and it was so awesome to FINALLY meet them both!!
The event started just after 7 and it was kicked off with Gayle taking her shoes off because so many people wanted to see them. They both have duets [Gayle: I have a duet of duets] and talked about how they were going to read parts of their books.
G: I just finished Time After Time on the plane, did you know you were going to do that? You're juggling so many things and how did you do it?
T: And was it really hard? Yes. I wrote the first book hoping it would be a series. I was so invested in the characters I felt like I could write them forever. And by the time I got done with TBU, I was done with it. But I was so happy that they picked up a sequel. How about you?
G: With If I Stay, no. I didn't think it was going to be a viable book and definitely didn't think it was going to be a sequel. And then the characters started waking me up and I started feeling a responsibility to them. I didn't want to deal with the immediate future and as soon as I made that decision, Adam's story came out.
For Just One Day, there was a week where there wasn't going to be a sequel. And FYI, I was going to end it exactly where it did.
As I was writing Just One Day, I had to figure out a lot about Willem. I had to figure out a deep backstory. Why was that day so important? You have to plant the seeds in book one if there's going to be a book 2.
T: I had a lot of fun with writing a new point of view, writing similar situations from another point of view.
Tamara talked about Time Between Us and then read from it. She read a scene about Maggie's house first from Anna's POV and then from Bennett's.
G: The shift of perpsective was fun. It changes everything. You see the entire year and you learn more about the characters and all of these moments where they could have passed each other.
Gayle read a piece from Just One Day that dealt with the watch and then another piece from Just One Year that also dealt with the watch.
They talked about both being pantsers. I missed most of this conversation because I was taking pictures....
G: Do you feel that each book has their own arc and then together tell a bigger story?
T: Yes. Absolutely. TBU is mostly Anna's story and how she started strong and got stronger. And Bennett's is the same way. His life is in no way miserable, he's not missing anything. It's how he is seen in her eyes.
G: I called mine books Trojan horse romance. I've got the army in there and look they're in Paris and now they're kissing and now they're more than kissing and then bam!
[Then there was a topic about family.  I blame these two ladies for being so charismatic that I couldn't focus on anything but them talking.]
T: In all 4 books, there's a part of family. Bennett is attracted to Anna's normal stable family and Anna is attracted to Bennett's adventure and fly by the seat of your pants life.
G: Maybe it's because I was a mother when I started writing.
G: Do you get a lot of people asking about the third book?
T: All the time! Maybe it's because they're conditioned to trilogies.
G: How many people want a third Mia and Adam book? [I raised my hand] It's so flattering, but let's look at what it would be. It's a book for the sake of being a book. Mia and Adam cook breakfast. Mia and Adam go for a walk. Mia and Adam kiss, but they've been together for a while, so it's not that hot. Or there's conflict.  Mia and Adam have a disease. Mia and Adam have a baby and it dies. Does anyone want that? If you do, there's something wrong with you.
T: With Time After Time, I had all of the readers in my head. I had to figure out a way to get everyone out. [I missed most of her answer, surprise, surprise]
G: Why do you always write girls POV first?
T: It never occurred to me to write it from his POV. And it's his gift... I loved the idea of a reluctant hero. I though that would be more interesting to show from the POV from the girl who loves him POV. Think Spider-Man from Mary Jane's POV.
And with the second one, it made sense. Once I got to know him so well, I thought it would be just fun to tell the story from his POV.
Was it hard? Yes. I don't think I would have done it if my editor hadn't pushed me to do it. FYI I've never been a 17 year old boy. I can get in the mindset of a 16 year old girl in high school. My husband read all of my drafts and told me when a guy wouldn't say those things. I had a hard time with the general male to male interactions. [At this point, there was a comment from Gayle about Tamara scratching her balls in public or something like that.  Seriously, my notes are shiteous.]
T: How about you?
G: It never occurred to me to write a male POV. Adam was easy to access because he's most like me. Especially the mean Adam in the beginning.
T: Let's talk settings. You have some great ones in your books, have you been to all of them?
G: Yes. India sort of sticks with you, but I made the entire family go to Mexico for Spring break. What about you?
T: Yes. We had to go to Paris for "research". I wrote 3 chapters and then told my editor to put them on hold. They were the last 3 chapters I worked on to make sure they were authentic.
G: I don't like reading travel books and it's important to me to have little details that make the location.  It's not an information dump like in a travel book.
And then the floor was opened up for Q&A.
What are you working on now?
T: I just told a book and it's awesome. I was feeling a little sad, missing Anna and Bennett, so it's been great working on that. And it'll be out Spring 2015. [Too. Far. Away. I also might have said that out loud.]
G: I worked on If I Stay for myself. It was saved under "why not". This is a book that I've cheated with, it feels amazing. I don't have a title, but I will tease by saying that it's the hottest guy I've ever written.
Do you have some routine when writing?
T: I can write anywhere as long as I have headphones. I don't listen to music a lot, I can't get the words down if there are other words in my head. I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks.
G: Get the kids out the door and coffee. Sometimes I will actually put on clothes and go to the cafe. It's not always productive, but it needs to be done. People always ask how do I find the time. It's like closet space, you work with what you have.
Do you write a requisite amount of words?
G: No. I write until I feel like there's almost nothing left. And then the next day I go back through everything I've done.
T: I do the same.  Sometimes I just spend the day editing what I wrote the day before.
G: Yes, because it's all crap.
Fan cast for your books?
G: I don't have one for If I Stay. And then when they did cast it, it was perfect. And the guy who is playing Adam? He's even hotter. Willem is the guy from the Lumineers, but not as pretty.
T: I don't have an Anna. [Her son said Lorde and then Tamara said maybe because she has long curly hair]. Bennett is kind of Jeremy from TVD. I like the nice guys. Anna's father will definitely be George Clooney.
What inspired you to be a writer?
T: I've always written for myself. It's cathartic. I wanted to write something that was for me, something that wasn't watching tv or going to the movies. Writing for young adults, I have to credit Judy Blume. In my dream of dreams, I want to create stories that people read over and over again.
G: The romantic answer would be that the stories inspired me. The realistic answer is that poverty inspired me. I was a journalist and we had bought and apartment and then I had a baby. I had 3 pieces killed in one month. Someone told me that I should write and it was like a light bulb went off.
There were more questions, but I just couldn't take my eyes off of these two ladies. I do remember someone asking if Tamara was attached to Cyndi Lauper and that's where she got the title for Time After Time. Gayle and Tamara instead bust out into the song.
The signing started around 8:15. I got up to Tamara first and told her that I had to ration what I had for her, that's why there was only 3.
I gave Gayle her huge pile and she started working on them. She asked where I came from and when I said San Diego, she said that she saw my tweet about it. And also mentioned how I was a really good friend for getting all of the books for other people. I calked myself a pack mule [thank you, Kami Garcia] and Gayle started laughing. We talked about my necklace [hand stamped charm that says "Book Boys are Better" from Charmed by Books] and how much she liked it.  Meanwhile, I loaded up on swag...
And then Tamara asked if I was leaving right away.  I said yes.  She asked if I could wait a minute and sent her husband out to the car... When he came back, she showed me four different foreign editions of Time Between Us and told me to pick one.  I grabbed the pretty pretty oversized UK version.
While Tamara was signing it, she was telling Gayle that I'm her Kevin Bacon.  She can connect around 100 readers of Time Between Us back to me.  This woman....she slays me in the best way ever.
After another round of hugs, I made my way through the store, saying goodbye to everyone I had met.  And I didn't get pictures with anyone. *face palm*
Tamara and Gayle are magical together.  This ridiculous recap and lack of good note taking is mostly my fault and partially theirs.  If they weren't so damn entertaining, perhaps I would have been able to do better.
Now. Go pick up all of their books.  You won't be disappointed.
The time it was about time travel
Do I even need to explain my flails for Tamara Ireland Stone? I didn't think so. I mean, I drove to San Francisco for the Time Between Us launch party and I'm doing it again for the launch of Time After Time. She is absolutely fabulous and not just because she gave me Bennett. I think it's safe to say that she's one of my favorite people.
When it was announced that Time After Time was actually happening, I emailed Tamara to see if she would be willing to do an interview for the blog. And she's so sweet, that she said yes!  But, before we get to her answers, let's take a look at the book, shall we?
Calling Anna and Bennett’s romance long distance is an understatement: she’s from 1995 Chicago and he’s a time traveler from 2012 San Francisco. The two of them never should have met, but they did. They fell in love, even though they knew they shouldn't. And they found a way to stay together, against all odds.
It’s not a perfect arrangement, though, with Bennett unable to stay in the past for more than brief visits, skipping out on big chunks of his present in order to be with Anna in hers. They each are confident that they’ll find a way to make things work...until Bennett witnesses a single event he never should have seen (and certainly never expected to). Will the decisions he makes from that point on cement a future he doesn't want?
Told from Bennett’s point of view, Time After Time will satisfy readers looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story, both those who are eager to find out what’s next for Time Between Us's Anna and Bennett and those discovering their story for the first time.
Sounds amazing, right?
1. Where did the idea for Time Between Us come from?
One evening, my husband and I got into this funny discussion about superpowers. He asked me what power I'd choose and I instantly answered, "Time travel." But then I qualified it. I told him I'd just like to go back to the early 90s for a few hours so I could see Green Day play on Gillman Street in Berkeley.
The discussion ended, but this idea was stuck in my head for the rest of the night. By the time I woke up the next morning, Bennett Cooper had a name, the ability to time travel, a penchant for live music, and a mad crush on a girl named Anna, who lived in 1995.
2. Did you plan to have two books?
I wrote Time Between Us hoping it would be the first in a series, but I wanted it to work as a stand-alone novel as well. It was sold as part of a two-book deal, and shortly thereafter, we decided to make the second book a companion. I didn't know it would be in Bennett's voice or exactly when it would pick up after the first book left off--those elements came a bit later. But with books releasing a year apart, there was a lot of overlap. I wrote Time After Time and revised Time Between Us simultaneously.
3. You wrote a time travel book that wasn't difficult to follow the "when" in the story [thank you]. Was that something that you actively wanted to do? As in, the decision not to have date stamps, etc.
Absolutely (and you're welcome). I gave this a lot of thought in the beginning. I wanted the time travel piece to be so natural, you could slip into the story and not feel like you needed to stop every few chapters to figure out "when" you were.
I really wanted readers to focus on the relationship between Anna and Bennett, and the transformation Anna makes as a result of knowing this person she never should have met. I wanted to leave you pondering big questions about fate and free-will. Date stamps may have pulled the reader away from the story I wanted to tell.
4. You wrote Time Between Us in Anna's POV and Time After Time is in Bennett's [squeeeeee!!]. Who was easier to work with?
Well, I've been a 16-year-old girl before, so slipping into Anna's voice was probably more natural for me. Bennett took a little longer, but once I got into his head, I absolutely loved writing from his point of view. I think it helps that he's a nice guy. I've dated nice guys and I ultimately married one, so I've done my research.
5. Will there be kissing in Time After Time? [This answer better be yes.]
Yes. Absolutely yes! Unlike Time Between Us, there's no need for the long build-up to the romance. Anna and Bennett are together from the start, so in Time After Time, we'll get straight to the kissing. Hello, Chapter Three.
Speed [ish] round:
1. What's your go-to guilty pleasure thing to eat?
Anything with caramel.
2. What are you reading right now?
I just finished Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl. It was amazing.
3. Who are your favorite swoony boys?
Étienne St. Clair. Adam Wilde. Noah Shaw (I know... he's yours. Sheesh.)
See. Told you I liked nice boys.
4. Are there any authors that you fangirl over?
Of course! Especially the authors who got me through my teen years, like S.E. Hinton and my hero, Judy Blume (warning: this is the part where I show off).
I somehow managed no to make a complete idiot out of myself when I ran into Judy during the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) conference. I look relatively composed, don't I? Inside, I was a weepy mess, thanking her for giving me Deenie, Margaret, and Katherine--who always felt more like friends than fictional characters--and for making me want to create stories of my own.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Huge thanks and undying love and devotion to Tamara for not filing a restraining order always taking the time to deal with my fangirling.

Be sure to check out her website, blog and Twitter!  And don't forget to add both books to your GoodReads TBR shelf!

Now.  Haven't had a chance read Time Between Us? Well, Tamara is so awesome, that she included a signed, hardcover copy for a giveaway! Keep in mind, Bennett is mine, I have proof.

The time it was Bennett's music

Do I even need to go into how much I adore Tamara Ireland Stone? If you follow me on Twitter, you've probably seen me fangirling all over her and flailing about Time After Time. So, of course when Tamara emailed me and asked if I wanted to take part in a musical blog hop that featured playlists for Anna and Bennett, my answer was...

As soon as I emailed my answer in shouty caps, Tamara emailed again with the dates and the songs.  I knew I wanted a Bennett date [because he's mine, I have proof], so I looked for that first.  Somehow, I went with 8/8 and then freaked out when I saw the song choices.  I immediately emailed Tamara back with my first song choice in shouty caps. And since I tend to act first, think later, I read her entire email that said I was supposed to pick two songs, just in case.  So, I wrote back with my second choice song [which I also really loved].

Alas, I got the first song I wanted and have been waiting so eagerly to share all of this with you guys.  Settle in, get comfy.  This could get lengthy.

First up, the book:
Calling Anna and Bennett’s romance long distance is an understatement: she’s from 1995 Chicago and he’s a time traveler from 2012 San Francisco. The two of them never should have met, but they did. They fell in love, even though they knew they shouldn't. And they found a way to stay together, against all odds.

It’s not a perfect arrangement, though, with Bennett unable to stay in the past for more than brief visits, skipping out on big chunks of his present in order to be with Anna in hers. They each are confident that they’ll find a way to make things work...until Bennett witnesses a single event he never should have seen (and certainly never expected to). Will the decisions he makes from that point on cement a future he doesn't want?

Told from Bennett’s point of view, Time After Time will satisfy readers looking for a fresh, exciting, and beautifully-written love story, both those who are eager to find out what’s next for Time Between Us's Anna and Bennett and those discovering their story for the first time

Without further ado, my song....

And of course, there's a backstory.

You may have seen me talk about my Pretty Prancy PA, aka: Christina.  Our love affair started on Twitter.  Introduced by Kassiah and bonded by flails over swoony boys and kick ass girls [mostly the boys], we started texting when Christina was reading Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. That turned into daily texting... which led to picture conversations, where she would send me lovely things like this:

And just like that, we had a song.  See, my Pretty Prancy PA, she lives in Mississippi.  I live in California.  We've never met, but she's my kindred spirit, my HBIC, my sounding board and my all around I-can't-live-without-you-person. We talk every day and I can't wait for the day when I show up on her doorstep [unannounced, of course] and get to carry her around like a backpack because I just can't put her down.

So, in a way, I feel for Bennett and can relate to some of the words of this song:

(Ho!)
(Hey!)
(Ho!)
(Hey!)

(Ho!) I've been trying to do it right
(Hey!) I've been living a lonely life
(Ho!) I've been sleeping here instead
(Hey!) I've been sleeping in my bed,
(Ho!) I've been sleeping in my bed
(Hey!)

(Ho!)

(Ho!) So show me family
(Hey!) All the blood that I would bleed
(Ho!) I don't know where I belong
(Hey!) I don't know where I went wrong
(Ho!) But I can write a song
(Hey!)

1, 2, 3
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet
(Ho!)

(Hey!)
(Ho!)
(Hey!)

(Ho!) I don't think you're right for him
(Hey!) Look at what it might have been if you
(Ho!) Took a bus to China Town
(Hey!) I'd be standing on Canal
(Ho!) And Bowery
(Hey!)
(Ho!) And she'd be standing next to me
(Hey!)

1, 2, 3
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart

Love – we need it now
Let's hope for some
So, we're bleeding out

I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweet
(Ho!)

(Hey!)
(Ho!)
(The last one)
(Hey!)

This song is perfect for Time After Time and Bennett specifically, because it sings of the basis all of Bennett's struggles. The first verse just screams Time After Time. [Trust me, I've already read it.] I could go on and on about the song and try to speculate, but I already know what happens.

And you guys? This book is perfection.  It's absolutely everything I would have wanted for a continuation of Anna and Bennett's story.

I will say only one thing about it: do not skip to the end and read it first.  If you know anything about me, I love spoilers [and how I adore River Song, I'll never know, but that's another thing all together].  I often read the last paragraph/page/chapter first.  If there's conflict in the story that I'm not too thrilled with, I'll skip to the end.  If there's an argument, I'll skip.  So far, there's only been 3 stories that I feel have been slightly ruined from this practice.

Time After Time is one them.  This story is so amazing, it needs to unfold the way Tamara wrote it.  Trust me.  Because I've already read it [and I'm clearly a bragging bragger who brags!]

Huge thanks, hugs and undying love to Tamara for not filing a restraining order inviting me to participate in this amazing hop.  Be sure to check out her website, blog and Twitter!  And don't forget to add both books to your GoodReads TBR shelf!

The time it was in a bar

Once upon a time, Gretchen McNeil posted an panel/event on Facebook with Brodi Ashton, Veronica Rossi and Jennifer Bosworth. Since it had SCBWI in the title, I asked if it was open to the public and then again if everyone would be willing to sign afterwards.

Gretchen's answer? DUH. [STG, My adoration for this woman is immense.]

Now, being the sneaky sneak that I am, I looked through the list of people who said they were attending. On that list? Tamara Ireland Stone. I may have died a little before sending her a creepy DM asking if she was really attending. Annnnd she said yes.

After getting books from Jaime & Erin, I just had to sit back and wait for the event day to get here. Patience. I've got it.

We headed up to LA early. Not only was it one of the last days of X Games, but it was the start of the Sunset Strip Music Festival, so we were expecting traffic to be even more shiteous then normal. And it was.

We got to the hotel around 4pm. There were so many people. After grabbing Starbucks, we settled into some seats in the lobby bar and waited some more.

I almost [literally] ran into Cynthia Hand and then Veronica, Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs all went walking by. I'm pretty sure I even saw Shannon Messenger. I was excitedly pointing everyone out to Hubs and he was not amused.

The upside to hanging out in the lobby bar area is all of the people watching. And LA has some of the best. We saw J. Bos come through the front door and she we chatted for a minute before she went to go find Gretchen.

Gretchen found us around 5 and invited us to the "circle of awesome", which was a grouping of couches around a fire pit. She introduced us to the group of people who where already there, including Amy Tintera.

I saw Tamara come down to the area. She was talking to Shannon when she saw me. I jumped up and we had an exuberant hug before we chatted for a bit. She also gave me some amazing gifts before breaking away to socialize with the people who kept streaming in.

A quarter from the Time Travel store for my expired parking meter & a Time After Time mug.

We sort of just sat back and took it all in since we were the only people in attendance who weren't authors....which I wasn't expecting.

Eventually, we left and went to one of the bars to get happy hour food. And had some delicious gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.

We got back to the circle of awesome and were just hanging out. Tamara came over and we started talking about my upcoming Time After Time playlist blog post. She also showed me an AMAZING Time After Time related photo that I hope she'll share at some point after the book is released.

We also talked about her release party for Time After Time and if Hubs and I were going to come up to San Francisco since she was planning on coming to San Diego. I also gushed all over her about the ending of TAT and how much I adored it. You guys, this book...I don't have words for it.

Gretchen, Jennifer and Brodi started talking about how Veronica was going to be late around 7:15. Gretchen said they were each going to answer three questions:

1. What is the best thing that has happened since you sold your book?

2. What is the worst thing that has happened?

3. What do you wish you knew before being published?

B: Meeting good friends. Seeing my book on the shelf. The day it was out I went to the store and freaked out. I told a woman  in the aisle "this is my book". The woman held up the book in her hands and said the same thing.

The worst part is realizing how much I don't have control. The cover, the tour, the signings. All of it.

I was under the impression that once I hit this milestone, it'll be smooth, that I'll have a career. And it's definitely not like that.

J: I'm going to work backwards. Do you know about the It Gets Better campaign? No, it's not true. It gets harder. The thing I thought would happen was validation and it didn't happen. There are so many people who are ready to judge your book and tweet you about it. I wish someone would have told me that.

The worst thing that's happened is that my publisher passed on my second book. One that I really believed in and I put my heart into it. I had to break into publishing all over again.

The best thing is that I was able to sell a second book. Not the same book, but a different one. It proved that I had more books in me.

G: The best thing was when Christopher Pike blurbed Ten. Got an email from cpike number number at AOL. He said that he wanted to blurb the book and I burst into tears. That was the moment I realized that I was an author because a person I read wanted to blurb my book.

The worst is when Barnes and Noble skipped on Ten. It's happening again with 3:59. It seemed like a death sentence, but I proved that it's not.

There is a hierarchy in your publisher. There are books that will get more money for marketing. I would have promoted my book differently if I would have known that there wasn't going to be a huge push.

The Q&A started while waiting for Veronica to come down.

Do you have any idea how much you spent on promoting your own book?

G: It's an expense, I got an outside publicist who got me an interview in PW. Indie bookstores carried Ten. More than $5k, less than $10k. Spent hundreds of hours in time and at least $400 at the post office.

J: I've probably spent around $3k on swag and travel for Struck.

B: I'm the one who spends myself to most places and that surprises a lot of people. I have to charge an author fee now because I've spent a lot of money in hotels.

Gretchen is great at self promotion on social media and I have a hard time doing that. I look to her to see how it's done.

G: The bookmarks that we hand out? We pay for those.

B: I gave out a car. That was a horrible way to spend the money.

How do you find out beforehand if your publisher will give you the push?

G: If they pay a million dollars for your book, they're going up promote it.

B: It could be based on the size of the advance. As it gets closer to the publication date, everything could change.

J: I didn't find out until 3 months before. I tried to find out, but I'm not sure they even knew.

B: Even if you have a healthy advance, they could decide to cut their losses.

G: I get asked how many books I've sold from doing the self promotion. There's no way to quantify that. It's not like tv where there are Nielsen ratings to show you exactly what you've done against the shows that aired at the same time.

When you do self promotion, do you check in with your publisher?

J: You are your best champion. [There was a lot more to this, but I was trying to take pictures.]

G: And sometimes you get 400 emails because you said something in an online interview that maybe you shouldn't have said.

Did you have an outside editor before you sold anything?

B: Get a really good critique group.

J: Find someone you can trust. Someone you know.

G: Mine is right there. Laurel has done all of the work on Ten and 3:59. It's really hard to find people to trust with your book.

J: You need to know when to trust yourself. Develop your instincts so it's not turned into something they want to read instead of what you want to write.

Why am I self publishing an old manuscript?

G: The money is immediately mine. It is completely written. It's not going to take me 6 months to finish, it'll take 2. [There was a lot more to this answer]

Veronica got there at 7:45 and she got the 3 questions.

V: I have been so lucky because of the publishing deal, I got to meet some amazing people. You can think of success in terms of book sales, but I'm in this for the long run, I'm going to be writing for the next 40 years. The journey is so rewarding to be able to email and text with author friends, having peers to share it with.

The worst? Book 2. It almost killed me. I almost fell out of love with writing. Writing on deadline was really hard. I had a fans who were waiting, an agent and editor who were waiting. It wasn't the same as writing for fun, for me. It was work. I pulled more all nighters than I did in college. BUT I LOVE IT.

G: We are lucky to be standing up here and have the pressure of deadline.

V: I never lost sight of that.

J: I way lost sight of it. I wanted to go back to writing for myself.

V: That's what I wish I knew. I actively try to protect the creative process. I walk for an hour a day. I listen to audio books during that time. I can't always pick up a book when I'm done for the day, I've always been a reader. I plow through audio books, I no longer have the editorial voice.

J: I listen to them all the time. I no longer read on the page. I'm tired of looking at words.

Did you know how many drafts you were going to go through?

B: if I knew it was going to be 18 drafts, I wouldn't have done it.

G: My books are really short with a tight outline.

J: Expect one horrible, rip your heart out of your chest, Indiana Jones rewrite.

At this point, I stopped typing the Q&A because before Veronica answered a question, she asked everyone not to tweet out her answer. I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not, so I just stopped taking notes. Before I left, I asked all four ladies if I could blog about the event. If one of them had said no or even hesitated with an answer, this post would have been entirely different.

They stopped taking questions at 8pm. I had books for Veronica, Brodi and Tamara.

I caught Veronica first. I showed her Jaime's UK copies and she hugged them, calling them her babies. I gave her the option of a hot pink or black sharpee. She picked hot pink because she had never used it.  We chatted for a minute or so before she told me that she better see us at the next event because this one didn't count. I told her that I was glad we weren't at the point where it was stalkerish. We hugged  and she dashed off to make the rounds.

Brodi was next. I was able to catch her finishing a conversation and sort of thrust Erin's books out at her. I gave her the option of hot pink or black and she chose black because she was dressed all in black. We chatted for a minute or so before she also hugged me and thanked me for coming.

And now for Tamara.

She was in the middle of a conversation and I didn't want to interrupt, but after a few minutes, Hubs was getting eager to head home. I hesitantly touched her arm, apologized to the two women who she was talking with, and asked if I could borrow her for two minutes.

Tamara said that I get way more than two minutes, excused herself from her friends and led me over to a table away from the crowd. Where we talked for 15 minutes or so. I learned all sorts of things about her writing process, how she reads her reviews and the different plot plans she had for Time After Time.

And I tried not to die from fangirling.

You guys. She is so amazing. *sigh*

She also signed my UK copies of Time Between Us.

She walked me back to where Hubs was standing before we had another quick photo shoot, several more hugs and a promise to see each other in October.

As always, Gretchen, J Bos, Brodi and Veronica were so much fun and the panel was really unique. This was definitely a drive I'm happy I made.

The time it was all bookish mail -- 4

It's time for another episode of Look What I Got in the Mail!

Do we all know my undying love and devotion for Tamara Ireland Stone? Yes, I drove up to San Francisco for the Time Between Us launch party. Annnnd since then, I've been simultaneously pushing Time Between Us on every single person I know and fangirling all over Tamara as much as I could without getting a restraining order.

Flash forward a bit.  Tamara had a giveaway for an Italian copy with a super hot cover.  That super hot cover had a shirtless version of my boyfriend, Bennett.  So, it goes without saying that I entered the contest.  Alas, I didn't win.

A week or so after the giveaway was over, Tamara DM'd me and asked for my mailing address, that she had a present for me.  I had no idea what it was. When I got this, my head almost exploded...

Perhaps you've seen Elizabeth Richards talking about her love of owls.  I sent her a package of owl post-it notes.  Then I found some owl bookmarks.  Before I sent the bookmarks, I asked Elizabeth if I could include my copy of Phoenix to have signed.  And she's so amazing, she agreed! Check out my owl!!

It's unfortunate that I haven't met Elizabeth yet, but Penguin better will send her to SoCal eventually.

After reading Spies & Prejudice, I emailed Talia Vance and asked for an interview. After flailing about like a lunatic, of course. Not only did Talia take the time to answer my fangirling questions, she donated a giveaway copy for the giveaway. AND a personalized copy for me!

I will have to meet her eventually because I need to get it in writing that Tanner is mine.  Never fear, I have a saved tweet.  Don't be thinking that he's up for grabs, he is most definitely not.

You might remember that I tried seeing Gennifer Albin at Festival of Books this year, but it didn't happen due to a scheduling mishap.  I was absolutely bummed out that we had already left the parking structure when Gennifer tweeted me back and said she'd be happy to meet up somewhere.

Thankfully, Gennifer was joining part of the Pitch Dark Days tour and Jenn was going to one of the stops.  She offered to take my books with her, so I sent them off.

When I saw that Neil Gaiman was touring, I tried to get tickets to see him.  Unfortunately, I heard about it too late and tickets were already sold out.  Thankfully, the awesome staff at Changing Hands bookstore had a mail order option.  I am beyond thrilled to add Neil to my collection.

Who is a spoiled brat?!? It's meeeeeeee!!

What books have you gotten lately?
