The time it was about the 12 days of Christmas

So.  There have been a lot of blogs doing holiday giveaways and the like.  I wanted to do something myself, but I wasn't sure what to do or how I wanted to do it.... All I did know is that I wanted to have a shitton of giveaways and [hopefully] give back a little.  I appreciate having all of you guys as followers and I really do love having a good giveaway.

Inspiration struck in the middle of the night. I slept on it, woke up loving the idea even more and started sending emails. Perhaps you saw me asking all sorts of questions on Twitter about giveaway books? It was all for this.

Without further ado, I present the 12 Days of Christmas!

Thanks to Jaime for the awesome graphic!

Every day from December 14th through December 25th, a new giveaway will be posted.  There will be new releases, older favorites and some signed copies.  There will also be some authors providing some funny Christmas stories or their favorite memories, so definitely check back every day.

The length of each giveaway will be a bit longer than usual.  Due to it being the holidays, I'm going to make each one go for 2 weeks instead of my normal of 1 week.  Hopefully that will give you guys plenty of time to enjoy your holiday and win some books. All of the individual pages will be compiled and linked down below to make it easier.

Now go do whatever you need to get ready for this extravaganza of books! Until then....

The time I hit 500 again

You guys.

Today I hit 500 followers on BlogLovin'.  It might not seem like a lot compared to some of the bigger blogs out there, but it's a lot to me.  And since I'm moving over to self-hosting soon, I'm going to lose all of the followers on GFC [so make the switch!].

I just want to thank you all for following along with me on this crazy ride.  Like I said in this post, I never thought I would continue this blog, let alone have anyone actually read my incessant rambling.

Again, I'm stunned.  Elated.  Speechless.  And another hot mess of flails.

So, let's celebrate with a giveaway, yes?  This is my second time around hitting 500 followers, so how about a giveaway for some of my favorite second books in a series?

Up for grabs:

Hardcover copies of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer and Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi.  Both books are signed! This contest is international.  I'm setting up two different Rafflecopters, so there will be two different winners. Additional rules are on the Rafflecopter widget.

I can't thank you guys enough for getting me to this number.  So, again, I say: stand there and let me hug you.

The time I was an ambassador

We all know of my major love affair with Sarah J Maas, right?

Apparently, the people at Bloomsbury know about it as well.  Someone saw all of my flails over Sarah, Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight and they still invited me to be part of the group of bloggers who will be promoting Crown of Midnight. My head almost exploded when I got the email! I guess fangirling really does pay off!!

I am thrilled to say that I am a Throne of Glass Ambassador.  Starting today, I will be posting fun stuff every Monday through September.  There will be extra content, giveaways and all sorts of other Throne of Glass/Crown of Midnight goodies, so make sure you check back every week!

Today's post is more of an informative one.  So, while you wait for the awesome post next week, here are a few things you can right now.  You could take a look at my ridiculously flailing review of Throne of Glass.

Or watch the book trailer for Throne of Glass...

Perhaps you'd like to see the book trailer for Crown of Midnight instead...

You could go check out Sarah's website and find her on Twitter or Facebook.  And of course, there's always the option of hanging out and fangirling around with me for a bit because I have a feeling it's going to take some time getting used to the idea that I am part of this awesome thing.

Or, if you're completely normal, answer me this: Chaol or Dorian? Why?

Until next week.....

The time I had so many followers

You guys.

Today marks a pretty monumental day in my blogging adventure.  Today, I passed 500 followers on the blog via GFC and passed 1000 followers on Twitter.

When I started this blog a year and a half ago, I never imagined that I would hit those numbers. I wasn't even sure that anyone would read this blog, let alone follow me here.  And today, I just watched the number of followers go up and up and up.

I'm stunned. Elated. Speechless. And a hot mess of flailing.

So.  In honor of this mega awesome achievement, not only do I want to jump through my laptop and hug each and every one of you, I'm going to have a giveaway of some of my favorite books by some of my favorite authors.

Up for grabs?

First up: a paperback copy of Unraveling and a hardcover copy of Unbreakable by Elizabeth Norris.  I will also include the bonus content booklet. Both books are signed.

Also?

A paperback copy of Throne of Glass and an arc of Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas.

This contest is international.  I'm setting up two different Rafflecopters, so there could be two different winners. Additional rules are on the Rafflecopter widget.

Now stand there and let me hug you.

The time it was a cover reveal

You guys.  I am so excited to be part of the cover reveal for Origin.  I mean, it's Daemon Jennifer L. Armentrout, so of course I was in.

Without further ado...

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on? And will they even be together?

I don't even have words for this...

Yeah...that pretty much sums it up.

Anyhoo.

Make sure you add it to your GoodReads shelf.  Origin releases on 8/27, but you should preorder it now at Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

The time I was part of a blog tour

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the Breathless Reads boxed set when they came out.  Right away, I fell in love with the cover of Venom.  And after reading it, I couldn't wait to meet Fiona and get a finished copy of the book.

Towards the end of September, Paper Lantern tweeted that bloggers who were interested in participating in the online tour should send an email.  Obviously, I'm not a reviewing book blogger, but I sent in an email to see if I could participate.

Lo and behold, Beth was more than happy to let me promote the Twitter party!! Also, below is an excerpt of Venomous, the prequel to Venom.

But first, the information about the Twitter party!!

It’s a LAUNCH PARTY!!

Join me at the #VenomReleaseParty
October 30th,6-8pm
(1800 to 2000) CST

Hi everyone! Fiona Paul here, dropping by my favorite book junkie’s digital space to invite you to a party! See, VENOM is going to have her book birthday soon, and rather than a traditional launch where I start the evening awkwardly tapping a microphone, sweat for an hour, and then end the evening awkwardly realizing the hem of my skirt has beentucked into my pantyhose all night, I figured I would have a party on Twitter! No mics. No sweating. No uncomfortable clothes. There will probably still be awkwardness because, you know, I’m going to be there, but the best thing about this launch party is that by having it on the interwebz everyone from Alaska to Zimbabwe can come. (Note: The timing of the party might be a tad late if you live in Zimbabwe. Sorry).

So why do you want to come to this party? See the above line about how I’m going to be there. Oh, also, there will be prizes.

Lead-up prizes: from today (October 23rd) to October 29th, I will be giving away 2 autographed Venom hardcovers.  All you have to do for a chance to win in change your twitter avatar to the Venon cover, conveniently located at the top of this post, and follow me @FionawritesYA. Basically, I will log on, say "The first person to respond to this tweet with Venom as their avatar wins an autographed copy." It doesn't get any easier than that.

But Fiona, I use a pic of my dog Snufalufagusas an avatar, and if I change it he might get mad. No worries. You can still win lots of great stuff!Like the…
Attendance prizes: All you have to do is show up at the party, AKA follow the #VenomReleaseParty hashtag and wait for me to announce giveaways. I will probably do some sort of trivia, like “First person to respond to thistweet with the place where you can find this [famous Renaissance work of art]wins [an awesome ARC].” I reserve the right to change my mind and do whatever Iwant, because it’s my party. But I will give all five of those galleys away, even if the only person that shows up is my mom.

The attendance prizes, generously provided by Penguin Teen:

1.     ARC of The Madness Within by Maureen Johnson

2.     ARC of Prodigy by Marie Lu

3.     ARC of Orleans bySherri L. Smith

4.     ARC of Out of the Easy by Ruta Septys

5.     ARC of Rise by Andrea Cremer

There is a good chance I will be adding additional prizes to this already awesome list! :)

But Fiona, what if I can’t make it to your party in real time because I do live inZimbabwe and I have to go to sleep before 0100?

Well, that brings us to the…

Bigger prizes: Anyone can win.  All you have to do is tweet a pictures of yourself in a mask or Halloween costume to me anytime between October 23rd and 2359 Central time on October 29th. Important!! You must tag this picture with the #VenomReleaseParty hastag.  No tag. No entry.

The pic can be you in a mask. It can be you in makeup. It can be you from twenty years ago. It can be you with Snufalufagus’s head Photoshopped onto your body. It can be a drawing. The idea is to generate some fun pictures, not to stress anyone out. If you have changed your avatar to the Venom cover when you tweet this picture, I will give you a second entry. Maximum of two entries. One posted pic per twitter handle please.

 The bigger prizes:
1.     A Penguin Teen Breathless Reads slipcase including Origin, Black City, The Innocents, Falling Kingdoms and Venom, with the Venom ARC autographed if desired

 2.     An autographed hardcover of Venom and 5 Venom bookmarks

3.     A $25.00 gift card to barnesandnoble.com
The fine print:
*Stacee is promoting my party/awesome giveaway because she is rocks, not because she is in any way affiliated with me or Penguin Teen or Paper Lantern Lit. I will try to keep up with comments here, but please direct all questions to me via twitter or my email fionapaulbooks at gmail dot com.

*All prizes are open for everyone. I will ship anything internationally.
*Sorry, but you cannot enter without a twitter account. Now’s a great time to make one!! :)

We leave the taverna and head toward the shore. The rushing sound of the watercomforts me, but my chopines sink into the sand making it almost impossible towalk. I slip them off and carry them in one hand, my other hand tucked insideBatista’s.

The beach is littered with pebbles and driftwood and dotted with patchy clumps oftall grass. I bend down and pick up a flat heart-shaped stone. “I dare you tothrow this rock so far out into the water that we don’t even see the splash,” Isay. It’s a game we play. I don’t even remember who came up with it. The dares start out small and escalate until someone refuses.

Batista takes the stone from me and cups it in one hand. He rears back his arm andthrows the rock out into the waves. I don’t see it land.

“My turn.” Batista takes my chopines from my hand. “I dare you to let down your hair.”

It’s improper for any woman to go wandering around with her hair hanging loose, but we’re alone, and for once I don’t have to be proper. I reach up and pull out the pins, flinging them down on the sand, sighing as the blood rushes back intomy scalp and the tight coils of hair tumble around my shoulders. The wind streams it out behind me like a flag. It feels so good. So freeing.

Batista drops my chopines. He pulls me in close, looking down at me as he cradles myface in his hands. “You are so beautiful,” he says. “So perfect.”

I wrap my arms around his waist and tilt my head upward. “I dare you to kiss me,”I say.

Our lips touch. Soft, and then harder. Warm, and then hotter. Batista’s hands rake through my hair, his fingers tangling themselves in my dark curls. My hands caress his back. His kisses alternate between tentative and hungry, as if he can’t quite decide who he’s supposed to be. When he eventually breaks away, we stand pressed so tightly together that not even a slip of parchment could fit between us.

Batista is quiet for a few moments, looking out at the bank of mist that has rolled in, blotting out most of the stars. The wind snaps the fabric of my skirts like a sail. Ringlets of dark hair whip around my face as the damp air swirls around me. I shiver, only now realizing that I left my cloak at Palazzo Domacetti.

“We should get away from the water,” he says.“You’ll get chilled.”

But San Domenico is so small that the whole island is near the water. I wrap my arm around his waist as I point this out, nestling into the warmth of his body.

“Come. This way.” He points at atall black fence crowned with sharp spikes. The gate groans as it swings backand forth in the wind. Beyond it, I can barely make out the edges of a building crowned by a steeple. A crumbling old villa sits on this side of the fence, the glow of a candle penetrating one of its windows.

“What is it?” I ask. “A church?”

“And a cemetery,” he says. I make a face, but Batista pulls me toward the fence. “Don’t be afraid. At least it will be sheltered from the wind, and you won’t have to worry about anyone seeing us together.”

Reluctantly, I let him lead me into the church yard. It has both crypts and a small plot of underground graves, but the area is thick with high grass and thorny vegetation as if no one visits the place anymore.

But if no one visits, then why was the gate left open?

“Are you scared?” Batista asks. He’s still holding my hand, but he walks several steps in front of me, more certain than I am of the uneven ground.

“No,” I lie. I try to pick my way through the weeds without soiling the hem of my dress. It’s the nicest gown I own, embellished at the bottom with lace trim. Joseph promised me new clothes, but I haven’t even gone for a fitting yet. It will be weeks before I have anything new to wear.

“Look.” Batista points at a crypt with a large angel perched on the roof. “Someone has left the tomb unlocked.”

I squint. I barely make out the word carved over the door: Greco. Sure enough, the padlock lies in the grass and the door to the mausoleum is slightly cracked.

“Come inside with me.” His voice isthe lightest it’s been all evening. “I dare you.” Excitement dances between his words.

The time it was my birthday

About 6 weeks before the date of the event, I noticed that Mysterious Galaxy had posted an event with Sarah J Maas on my birthday.  It was pretty much a given that I was going to go.

On the day of, I met Michelle at Starbucks a few hours before the start time so we could catch up on all things post-SDCC. We also bought some books.  And Michelle gave me the most awesome compact mirror that I'm so in love with.

After the chairs were set up in the store, we quickly claimed the front row.  Sarah was supposed to start at 2, but she got stuck in some traffic and got there just after.  And before she started to talk, she announced to everyone that it was my birthday.

AND THEN SHE GAVE ME A BIRTHDAY HAT.

She said I didn't have to wear it, but I did.  *cough*  She also mentioned how she set it next to her stuff the night before because she didn't want to forget it.

Sarah started talking about all sorts of things... The books she read when she was younger, how she got into fantasy, cutting 100k+ words from the original version of Throne of Glass, the novellas, the tv show marathons she likes to have [Honey Boo Boo Child], what she plans to read next [Obsidian, after I told her how amazing it was *squee*], being emotional about her FictionPress fans and just so much more.

I asked if she could tell us anything about book 2.  Her answer was that it starts immediately after book 1 and follows the characters who survive down the dark and twisted path they need to go down. Oh, and that there would be kissing.  A lot of kissing. A lot of kissing that she wasn't going to allow her editor to cut from the final draft.

Sarah talked for about 35 minutes or so.  After that, she started to sign.

I didn't take any pictures.

Well, that's not entirely  true.  I did take one picture while she was in the middle of talking. And she said "Hello, picture" and then did this quite awesome pose against the podium with could be the best expression on her face.  But, I won't post that one.  In case she actually reads this and isn't too happy for that moment to have been immortalized.

But, Mysterious Galaxy posted this one on their FB page.

Michelle and I went up to Sarah together. We chatted it up for a few minutes.  I got Sarah to sign my hat after taking pictures with her while I was wearing it.

She also had a copy of Throne of Glass that she was asking everyone who attends to sign.  She told me that I had to sign it again, so I'm guessing it's the copy from Mrs. Nelson's.  I flipped to the scene with Dorian and Celaena and the candy and signed there...

And my book? The inscription is pretty awesome.

Sarah kept saying that she couldn't believe that I came to the event on my birthday. Apparently, I haven't made my adoration of her clear enough....

On the way out, Michelle bought another book.  Sarah's husband was sitting behind the counter and said hi, happy birthday and that it was nice to see me again.  He asked what else I was planning on doing for the rest of the day.  When I said Disneyland, that launched us into an entire conversation about when the best time to go was, how he felt like a creeper because he went by himself during ALA and that they plan on going more often in the future.

I just might die at the Happiest Place on Earth if I saw Sarah and her husband there.

The time I wanted the Australian cover

I fell in love with Graffiti Moon instantly. The lyrical way Cath Crowley tells the story of Lucy and Ed while they look for Shadow made me feel as if I was in the van, right next to them.

As soon as I finished the book, I first went looking for Cath's website to see if there was a chance to get a signed copy. After it seemed nearly impossible, I then went hunting for a copy with an Australian cover. Not that the US cover isn't pretty, because it is....

However, with just the lone, stark yellow spray can on a black background, I feel like the Australian cover embodies the entire book.

Now. Tracking down an Australian version was more difficult than I thought it would be. I found and emailed several Australian bookstores with online stores asking about the book and the possible shipping costs. All of the stores came back and said they would be more than willing to ship the book, if they had it. One store even told me to try to contact the publisher directly.

Slightly defeated, I posted something about my search on Twitter and included Cath in the post... We ended up having a delightful conversation about the different covers. And then she told me that I should enter the contest she was having on her website to win a copy of the book.

So, off to her website I went.  And this is what I found:

"Write one line describing something that you love. Send it along in the comments section.

I’m thinking something along the lines of art or poetry or avocado on toast or gliding under water rather than that guy or girl on the bus who will not look at you no matter how hard you will them to with the power of your eyes, but really, who am I to judge? Send along any love that gets you through the day.

Write it in an interesting way, though, and we’ll put the whole thing together as a full piece. The two loveliest loves get a book. Everyone else gets the good feeling of being words on a page.

And if no one enters, well, I’ll write the piece myself. It will be much nicer the other way, though."

The line I immediately entered? I love to smell the pages and feel the glossy cover of a brand new book, right before I open it to be transported to a new world.  Right after I entered, Cath tweeted me and and commented on how great my line was.

Flash forward to the end of the competition...

Out of the blue,  I got an email stating "Cath Crowley is now following you on Twitter".  10 seconds later, I got a DM from her.  Cath told me that while she loved my line and really wanted me to win, she didn't pick me because she felt like it would have been rigging the contest and then advertising it on Twitter.  But that if I sent her my address, she would send me a copy of the Australian version because I loved the cover so much.

I was stunned by her offer, even more that she wouldn't let me pay for the book or for shipping.  I gave her my address and Cath said it would go out in the mail right away.

I got the mail today... And here it is.  Not only did I get a copy with the Australian cover that I am in love with, it was signed.

I have never been so floored... I just keep staring at it.  I'm so so so so so excited and couldn't be more amazed at her generosity.  Unfortunately, there wasn't a return address, so hopefully, Cath will see this post as my thank you/love note.
